Navantia Australia Launches For the WIN (Women in Navantia) Network

Melbourne, Victoria, 5 September 2024

Navantia Australia has launched its For the WIN (Women in Navantia) network. For the WIN is Navantia Australia’s internal, female-led community, created to help connect and support its female staff across teams and across the business.

Women working within the defence industry can face a niche range of challenges and building supportive networks is just a step in the road to overcoming them. For the WIN invites women from across Navantia Australia’s business areas, disciplines, and offices to come together to discuss women’s issues in the industry, create lasting connections, and guide each other towards success.

The launch of the For the WIN network compliments continued efforts to encourage more women to consider a career in Navantia Australia and promote it as a gender-equal, inclusive, and diverse workplace.

Diversity Champion and Navantia Australia Managing Director, Mr Israel Lozano remarked that women in defence industry are typically underrepresented.

“The creation of the For the WIN network is an important move as it sets the tone of our culture for years to come. Diversity fosters creativity, innovation, and drives better decision-making, ultimately leading to a stronger sovereign shipbuilding and sustainment industry,” said Mr Lozano.

Chief Business Development Officer and Navantia Australia’s first female senior leader, Mrs Cindy Slaven, said Navantia Australia has more than doubled the number of women in its organisation since 2021 with representation exceeding industry average.

“At Navantia Australia, we don’t simply talk about supporting women; we work to actively promote gender equality and inclusivity in our workplace. Through initiatives complimentary to For the WIN, such as mentorship programs and professional development opportunities, Navantia Australia has worked to create a supportive space where women can excel while working within a traditionally male-dominated field. We are also an active collaborator in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs aimed at encouraging young female students to undertake tertiary study and careers in these fields.”

Inaugural For the WIN activities have been held across Navantia Australia’s operating locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth with participants coming together for the first time to share experiences, advice and build connections. For the WIN is recognised by the development of its own brand and symbol available to be worn by participants, advocates and supporters.
