Kodal LMV-M
Kodal Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel (LMV-M)
Capability Across Environments
Capable. Versatile. Australian.
The Kodal Class Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel – Medium (LMV-M) is an Australian designed vessel developed by Navantia Australia’s Melbourne Naval Design and Engineering Centre.
A versatile vessel designed to operate effectively in varied maritime conditions, the LMV-M can transport troops, equipment, and supplies from ship to shore, facilitating complex, amphibious operations. The Kodal Class are essential to modern militaries, enabling forces to project power, support humanitarian missions, and conduct disaster relief in difficult-to-reach regions. The LMV-M was designed to Australian military operational and technical standards and is in-principle assured by Lloyd’s Register, meaning a high level of compliance to both Australian and internationally recognised standards.
The LMV-M is optimised for both littoral and riverine operational environments while also meeting the voyage requirements for extended distances. It is engineered for seamless movement between ships and shorelines, which is crucial during amphibious assaults. The monohull configuration is suitable for a wide range of sea states, with its design allowing it to land on beaches or other challenging terrains to provide critical support to ground forces. This capability ensures rapid deployment and extraction of personnel and equipment during military operations.
Designed For Versatility. Built For Growth.
The size and displacement of the vessel are well-suited for constrained riverine environments, while its hull design, propulsion system, and accommodation features meet the demands of open-ocean transit.
The single bow ramp enables the vessel to complete beach landings, stern dock marriages, and operations at ports with limited infrastructure. A multi-purpose open deck enhances versatility, accommodating personnel transit, UAV operations, and future modular weapon payloads. The propulsion system offers the flexibility to operate on either two or four engines, optimising fuel consumption and maintenance while ensuring important redundancy. This adaptability is essential for operations across diverse geographies, ranging from remote archipelagos to flood-affected riverine areas. Equipped with advanced propulsion systems, the LMV-M provides high-speed transit and exceptional manoeuvrability, which enables rapid response times and the capacity to evade potential threats. The LMV-M possesses a significant load capacity, capable of transporting considerable personnel, vehicles, and cargo, which is vital for sustained operations. Its flexibility in accommodating varied payloads renders it invaluable for both military campaigns and humanitarian missions.
The Kodal is outfitted with cutting-edge navigation and communication systems designed to enhance situational awareness and coordination with other naval and land units. Their ability to access remote or damaged coastal areas positions them to deliver critical aid, medical supplies, and rescue teams during natural disasters or humanitarian crises. The stealth and speed of the LMV-M also make it suitable for supporting special operations forces, enabling covert insertion and extraction of units and providing a critical advantage in operations requiring discretion and precision.
Kodal LMV-M is a highly adaptable vessel that plays a crucial role in both military operations and humanitarian initiatives. Its capacity to operate under various conditions and support a wide range of missions makes it an indispensable asset within modern naval fleets.
