A Sovereign Capability Success Story

Navantia Australia designs, integrates, and supports naval maritime platforms and systems for the Royal Australian Navy. We are recognised as a Design Authority by the Commonwealth of Australia for the Canberra Class Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD), LHD Landing Craft (LLC), Hobart Class Destroyers (DDG), and Supply Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) Ships.

At Navantia Australia, we are committed to growing our local workforce and links to the Australian Supply Chain to best support the growth of a truly Australian naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry. As a leader in shipbuilding and maritime solutions, Navantia Australia is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of naval innovation.

We have a commitment to developing advanced systems and technologies that enhance the capabilities, efficiency, and sustainability of the modern naval industry. Navantia Australia is committed to dynamic change and improvement and where possible we seek new equipment and processes to deliver improvements in cost, quality, efficiency and performance.

Three Centuries of Shipbuilding

The history of Navantia dates back to the year 1717, when Spanish Quartermaster General José Patiño ordered the construction of Spain’s first modernised shipyard, the Real Arsenal de la Carraca in San Fernando. This was followed in 1731 by the construction of the Cartagena shipyard, and again in 1750 with the construction of the shipyard at Ferrol.

In 1908, these shipyards were integrated into the “La Naval” Naval Shipbuilding Society, which included civilian shipyards at Matagorda and Sestao. After the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, the Spanish state took control of the military arsenals and created Bazán, the predecessor to Navantia, in 1947. In the early 21st century, La Naval and Bazán merged to form IZAR.

Navantia as we know it today was created in 2005 as a result of the splitting-up of IZAR, with the fundamental aim of improving its business efficiency.

Building Australian Naval Capability

Navantia has been represented in Australia since 2000 and began our formal in-country presence in 2006. Upon being awarded the contracts to deliver three classes of warship, Navantia Australia was established in 2012 as a subsidiary of Navantia, becoming the first designer locally available throughout the life of the Royal Australian Navy’s ships. Since that time, we have grown our local footprint and our local workforce significantly. Navantia Australia is located across the country, with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra.

Our partnership with the Royal Australian Navy began with the contracts to design the Hobart Class Destroyers; and continued with the design and co-manufacture of the Canberra Class LHDs, the construction of twelve LHD landing craft, and the build and sustainment of the two Supply Class AORs.

Navantia Australia is committed to continuing our partnership with the Commonwealth to support the sustainment of Royal Australia Navy capabilities, with a focus on the ships designed by Navantia, which represent 110,000 tonnes, or over 60% of the Australian Surface Fleet. Navantia Australia combines best-of-breed Asset Management capabilities with product design knowledge and efficient access to the supply chain.
