Through-Life Support
Through-Life Support
Comprehensive Design and Engineering Support
Top-Tier Support Across Platforms
Navantia Australia is proud to be the trusted provider of through-life support services for all Navantia-designed platforms in service with the Royal Australian Navy. Recognising the crucial role that platform designers play in sustainment, we offer a comprehensive portfolio of through-life support services. This includes performance-based logistics contract management for vessels, systems, or equipment delivered by Navantia, ensuring their availability and optimising life cycle costs. We also provide design services aimed at maintaining, updating, and upgrading systems to guarantee state-of-the-art capability. Our continuous maintenance services and condition-based assessments are designed to enhance the availability of vessels, alongside overhaul and major upgrade projects to boost operational capability. Additionally, we support procurement and liaise with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), offering a wide range of supply support services. To further enhance operational readiness, we deliver ongoing training and simulation tools for crew and naval base personnel.
Navantia Australia has been given Design Authority for the Hobart Class Destroyers (DDGs), Canberra Class Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs), LHD Landing Craft (LLCs), and Supply Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment Vessels (AORs) through best-practice transfer of technology procedures and a localisation of Navantia’s Australian activities to our 99% locally engaged workforce. Through our role as platform designer of the DDGs, LHDs, LLCs, and AORs, we provide comprehensive through-life support to the Hobart Class Destroyer sustainment contractor. Our through-life support is currently performed by our experienced field engineers based out of HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, supported by their peers in our Melbourne Naval Design and Engineering Centre.
Navantia Australia’s maintenance excellence influences the best maintenance practices of our TPN and other partners, resulting in quality outcomes for the Royal Australian Navy. We pride ourselves on conducting accurate maintenance, using the correct parts, and adhering to the scheduled timeframe. Navantia is globally recognised for its Integrated Platform Monitoring System (IPMS) and data analytics capabilities, which aid in identifying and predicting equipment performance, resulting in accurate maintenance planning and enhanced engineering design. In 2020, Navantia Australia was entrusted with managing the initial five years of sustainment for HMA Ships Supply and Stalwart. The successful sustainment of the AORs saw consecutive Extended Maintenance Periods (EMPs) complete more than 95% of the contracted scope under budget and on schedule.
Our Role As The Designer Support Contractor
In 2025, Navantia Australia signed the Designer Support Contract (DSC) to provide comprehensive design and engineering support to all Navantia-designed ships in service with the Royal Australian Navy. The DSC amalgamates Navantia Australia’s extant Support Services contracts for the Royal Australian Navy’s DDGs, LHDs, LLCs, and AORs, as well as the Platform System Designer Deed into the one contractual arrangement. The Commonwealth of Australia (CoA) requested Navantia Australia to perform as the Designer Support Contractor (DSC) as Navantia Australia is the Original Equipment Manufacturer Design Authority for the four classes of vessels currently incorporated into the contract. This engagement builds upon the Strategic Agreement Principles document signed between the Royal Australian Navy, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG), Navantia, and Navantia Australia, which designated Navantia Australia as the Platform Design Agent for all Navantia-designed vessels.
The DSC provides end-to-end change management and engineering services to the assets incorporated in the contract, providing Navantia Australia the platform to partner with the CoA and explore greater, innovative solutions for sustainment and asset management. The DSC is a vital component to the success of the new Maritime Sustainment Model as Navantia Australia’s deep product knowledge and baseline management will facilitate design integrity throughout sustainment and continuous improvement activities. Appointing Navantia Australia as the single DSC entity for the incorporated assets provides the CoA the opportunity to implement cross-platform efficiencies, including in Supply Chain support and the enabling of sovereign innovation opportunities.
