Lead Combat Systems Integration Engineer

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Lead Combat System Engineer is responsible for leading the Combat Systems integration discipline to deliver combat systems integration for naval ships. Systems responsibility includes engineering services for Combat systems, including, not limited to:

  • Combat Management Systems and Sensors (e.g. Radars and surveillance systems, Tactical Data Links)
  • Weapons and Sensor Systems (e.g. missile and gun systems, countermeasures, fire control systems, etc)
  • Communications Systems and Sensors (e.g. terrestrial and satellite radio systems, Intercom, telephony and switching systems, etc)
  • Navigation Systems and Sensors (e.g. ECDIS, Navigation Radars, Inertial Navigation and gyroscopes, etc)
  • Entertainment and Training Systems (e.g. Internet at Sea, Satellite TV, Entertainment systems and distribution, etc)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work effectively within the broader Navantia Engineering Team by engaging and working with the different engineering disciplines.
  • Provide high level of naval engineering technical competence based on relevant experience and knowledge.
  • Provide experience and broad technical knowledge of functional and detailed design related to Combat Systems Integration of a naval ship.
  • Provide leadership and line management to the Combat Systems engineering discipline in the successful achievement of assigned projects and tasks, including:
  • Complete systems design for naval ship systems, applying robust systems engineering process.
  • Lead weekly design coordination meetings with the rest of the Combat System Team members.
  • Support the team in undertaking of ship Combat System area documentation: technical investigations, root cause analysis and solution identification, impact assessment, analyses, drawings, designs, reports, Installation work packages, etc.
  • Deliver technical reports and technical documentation in accordance with established Navantia and customer standards.
  • Plan and coordinate assigned engineering projects from concept through to delivery, including the development of project plans, schedule, and engagement of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plan and administrate design coordination meetings with engineering project stakeholders and the Client, support then to Liaise with the customer or customer’s representative, subcontractors & suppliers to ensure that all the relevant information is available, and deliverables are provided in a timely fashion.
  • Liaise with the classification societies and national authority where appropriate. Ensuring that the classification and/or national standards named in the specification for an assigned project are met.
  • Organise Design Review Meeting with the customer or customer´s representatives.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively across the different engineering discipline and Engineering teams working on the Programs

QUALIFICATIONS AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience in an engineering function.
  • Experience as in a technical and industrial Defence environment.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and manage an engineering team.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously using initiative, sound reasoning, listening and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results in a high‐pressure environment.
  • Ability to manage, prioritise and complete multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships at all levels of the business and clients.
  • Proven ability to produce and review clear and well‐presented reports to a suitable quality and standard.
  • 2D/3D CAD and other specialist software as required to review design information.
  • MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheet data and presentation information.
  • MS Project to monitor task and manage resources.
  • Knowledge and experience of vessel outfit and the requirements for equipment integration, preferably
  • Naval Ships and with direct shipyard experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets.
  • Knowledge and experience of ship Combat System integration design and its application to local structure and foundations.
  • Knowledge and experience of ship systems design and its impact upon integration.

COMPETENCIES

Technical:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Marine platform Designs, Electrical, Combat System Integration engineering
  • Experience working with Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to understand and apply of relevant shipbuilding regulations and standards (MIL, STANAG, IEC, DEF(Aust), Australian Standards, Classification Society, and IMO requirements)
  • Capacity to provide technical assessment based on engineering calculations.
  • Significant experience working with technical documentation.
  • Sound knowledge of design services
  • Understanding of the naval/shipbuilding industry operations.

Management:

  • Ability to work independently and communicate with stakeholders.

The Role:

This landmark contract marks a significant milestone for Navantia Australia, as it is the company’s first contract held directly with the Commonwealth of Australia (CoA), underscoring its commitment to innovation and excellence in the maritime industry.

We have exciting opportunities for a Risk Manager to join the team out of its Garden Island, Sydney office. Operating under the Design Support Contractor (DSC) contract, you will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks. This includes developing risk management controls and contingency plans, conducting policy and compliance audits, and collaborating with various departments to ensure the organization is fully informed about potential risks and implementing processes to mitigate these risks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the risk management operations and activities under the DSC.
  • Manage and update the Risk Management tools for Navantia (Predict & excel).
  • Work closely with business units to ensure consistent adoption of risk management policies and frameworks, ensuring clarity and consistency in managing risks and controls across the organisation
  • Perform risk assessments and audits, identifying and analysing risks affecting the Program and Enterprise.
  • Lead risk review activities and update the tools to ensure the registers are current and accurate.
  • Work closely with all areas of the program to ensure program risks are managed effectively in Predict.
  • Work closely with the production teams to ensure risks relating to maintenance activities are captured in excel, suitable controls identified and regularly monitored and reported at the weekly IPT and PEB.
  • Work closely with the Design & Engineering team to assist in developing and maintaining the risk registers associated with each design task.
  • Ensure high level and longer term risks from the excel tools are carried forward into the Navantia and Enterprise Risk Tools (Predict).
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly and quarterly reporting to internal (PSR) and external stakeholders (CSR & CSSR).
  • Participate in the relevant maintenance, supply, engineering and commercial team review meetings to enable risks to be captured and reported.

Navantia Australia has been awarded the Designer Support Contract to provide comprehensive design and engineering support to all Navantia-designed ships in service with the Royal Australian Navy. This landmark contract marks a significant milestone for Navantia Australia, as it is the company’s first contract held directly with the Commonwealth of Australia (CoA), underscoring its commitment to innovation and excellence in the maritime industry.

We have exciting opportunities for a Validation & Verification Engineer to join the team out of its Garden Island, Sydney office. In the role, the V&V Engineer is responsible for the planning, conduct and recording of Validation and Verification (V&V) activities associated with the implementation of Engineering Change to Naval vessels.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop V&V test planning and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) capture plans for the execution of engineering change test programs.
  • Development of inspection and test procedures in support of engineering changes, providing sufficient detailed instructions for the Regional Maintenance Provider (RMP) to conduct the physical testing activities.
  • Support Production Test Readiness Reviews (TRR) in accordance with the DSC Engineering Management Plan
  • Manage the V&V test activities including the coordination of Commonwealth stakeholders, RMP and OEM resources, Class Society representatives and test equipment.
  • Participate in the test activities as the Test Witness, directing the test and collection the required OQE and Documentation supporting the V&V Test Report and record any test issues or deviations.
  • Develop the V&V Test reports and collate OQE.
  • Provide high level of engineering technical competence based on relevant experience and knowledge.
  • Support System Set-To-Work / recommissioning.

As the ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years in an engineering role, preferably in the Defence industry.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering process, specifically the V&V phases and relevance to system requirement definition
  • Proven skills and experience in an engineering or marine environment working as a technical specialist in a field engineering or systems engineering role.
