Navantia farewelled Australian Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AAOR) “Supply” this morning, as she left from Pier 9 of the Ferrol shipyard to begin her transit to Australia. The transit is expected to take approximately 35 days of navigation. The departure of “Supply” was celebrated with a small ceremony taking place.

Despite challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Navantia has completed the “Supply”, the first of the two AOR vessels being built for the Royal Australian Navy, in accordance with the contract signed in May 2016 with the Commonwealth of Australia.

This contract has resulted in 1.5 million hours of work per ship, as well as 35,000 hours derived from the manufacture and supply of the main engines, diesel generators and reducers. Another 35,000 hours of work has been involved with the Integrated Platform Control System (IPMS), which is generating approximately 1,800 direct and indirect employees annually until the end of the program. Of these workers, more than 330 are direct employees, in excess of 530 employees from the auxiliary industry and over 900 indirect employees through other suppliers.

The contract for the AAORs also includes the initial sustainment support for the life cycle of the two AOR vessels for a period of 5 years. This will be performed by Navantia Australia and supporting Australian industry partners.

NUSHIP “Supply” will arrive at the naval base HMAS Stirling, located on Garden Island, near the city of Perth in the state of Western Australia. The ship will then completed for its final delivery to the Royal Australian Navy next December. This final fit-out period will include important participation from the Australian defence industry that will be responsible for the installation and testing of elements of the combat and communications systems, as well as some logistics areas.
