Internships Learn the ropes at Navantia Australia

Navantia Australia offers a range of paid internships for Engineering and Naval Architecture students from Australian universities to complete their Engineering Professional Practice. Many of these students have gone on to begin their careers with Navantia Australia in our shipbuilding and sustainment support programs. Paid internships typically commence towards the end of the academic year, for undergraduates between their third and fourth year of study.

Joining our team will give you the opportunity to challenge yourself with new and exciting projects in Australia’s growing Defence Industry and learn the ropes while supported by a team of experts in a range of fields.

Our internship program is designed to expose you to unique learning opportunities while meaningfully contributing to real-world projects. Engineering and Naval Architecture students participating undertake a 20-week placement in our offices located at Garden Island, Sydney and Docklands, Melbourne to gain experience in support of Australian naval platforms.

Applications for our Professional Placement program is managed directly through our partner universities – Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of New South Wales at Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW at ADFA) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Alternatively, if you are interested in an internship and you are studying with a different university, you can apply via open advertising or by contacting careers@navantia.com.au.

We offer a range of internships in the following disciplines:

  • Naval Architecture
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • General Design/ Outfit Engineering
  • Combat Systems Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Business Analytics
  • Data Analytics

In your internship you will gain useful exposure to highly specialised, technical work. Navantia Australia interns also have the opportunity to visit Navantia-designed vessels and see the impacts of their hard work in action.

Upon the completion of your internship, you may have the opportunity to join our team as a full time graduate or continue working part time until you complete your degree.

At Navantia Australia, developing the future workforce of Australia’s sovereign naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry and fostering the careers of tomorrow’s engineers is part of our promise to deliver capability.

Testimonials

Kai Andrews, Combat Systems Engineering Intern

“I chose to do an internship with Navantia Australia as I was interested in learning more about what a career in Engineering and Defence looked like. During my internship, I was part of the Combat System Integration team and I was fortunate to work on a range of tasks including investigating designs for proposed upgrades on the Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) and Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships. I also had the opportunity to visit the ships in Sydney and see how the designs we had produced were being installed and used by the Navy.

My internship at Navantia Australia allowed me to develop technical and professional skills through working as a team with Engineers from various disciplines and presenting the designs I had worked on. The culture at Navantia Australia encourages collaborating and knowledge sharing, and everyone is always happy to have a chat about ideas for a design or the best way to approach a task. It allowed me to take on challenging and rewarding work while still having the support and guidance I needed when completing projects.

I would highly recommend applying for an internship with Navantia Australia. It was an excellent introduction into working as an Engineer and gave me a great insight into the opportunities available for an Engineering career in Defence. Due to the great experiences I had, I chose to return as a graduate Engineer after completing my University degree.”

Michael Currington, Combat Systems Integration Engineering Intern

“I chose to do an internship with Navantia Australia because they are one of the major system and integration engineering partners of the Royal Australian Navy and they oversee and impact many large-scale and varied projects at any point in time. I knew that the work at Navantia Australia would be engaging, I would have the opportunity to use and learn new engineering skills, and above all that I would be contributing to important projects in the Australian defence industry. I have developed a great appreciation of the field of systems engineering and the processes involved in projects spanning different technical fields. I have enhanced my software development skills and gained a greater understanding of the details involved in using RF electrical cables and antennas. The defence industry is an attractive field to young, curious, and inspired engineers because there are always so many projects to contribute to and problems to overcome. The use of high-class technology in the Defence industry is really exciting to those with an interest in engineering. The defence industry thus allows me to use, develop, and be passionate about my engineering skills.

Visiting the ships was a really awesome experience! The size and complexity of the ships is impressive, and the amount of equipment and detail required for the ships to be operational is crazy. We got a great tour of an AOR where we got to visit many different compartments, including the engine and generator rooms, the living compartments, the bridge, the workstations, and the big pumps and hoses. We also got a tour of the LHD where we visited the large cargo hangars, the landing craft dock (where the landing craft are deployed from within the LHD), and got to go on the flight deck.

I would absolutely recommend doing an internship with Navantia Australia. The team is really friendly and make it a very enjoyable environment to work in. I have learnt many new things about the defence industry and engineering in the real-world and have developed numerous new skills that are moveable across fields too. I greatly enjoyed my internship at Navantia Australia.”
