One of Navantia’s key activities is to provide through life support to all Navantia designs in Australia, namely the Royal Australian Navy's Hobart class, the Canberra class, the LHD Landing Crafts and the new Supply class AORs.
This activity is currently performed by our talented, experienced personnel located at Sydney’s Garden Island and our Sydney office, and strongly supported by our engineers in our Melbourne Naval Design and Engineering Centre. To provide additional sustainment support for the Navy’s new Supply class AORs, Navantia will open its first office in Western Australia.
Navantia Australia understands that the designer role is a key element of sustainment and we are fully committed in supporting the Australian Government in this activity. As such we provide a comprehensive portfolio of Through Life Support services encompassing:
- performance based logistic contracts management for vessels, systems or equipment delivered by Navantia ensuring availability and optimising life cycle costs
- design services to maintain, update and upgrade systems ensuring state-of-the-art capability
- continuous maintenance services and condition based assessment to enhance vessels’ availability. Overhaul and major upgrade projects to increase operational capability
- supporting the procurement and liaison with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and providing a whole portfolio of supply support services
- ongoing training and simulation tools for crew and naval base personnel.
Navantia Australia is providing engineering services – including design, technical support, configuration management, supply support and smart maintenance for the RAN’s Canberra class Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) under Asset Class Prime Contractor (ACPC) program with Naval Ship Management (NSM) Australia. In addition to being the ship designer, integrator and builder, Navantia is also the OEM for a number of platform systems. Navantia is also the designer and OEM for the 12 LLC landing craft embarked upon the LHDs, the sustainment for which is also included under the ACPC. We are working closely with Australian Defence Industry suppliers to build a strong global supply chain in place to support their sustainment.
Through our role in as platform designer of the Hobart class Guided Missile Destroyers (DDG), Navantia is providing Platform Design Services (PDS) for their transition to service under the Transition Support Period (TSP) Services contract with BAE Systems Australia. Navantia is also the OEM of several systems including the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), diesel engines and generator sets, meaning we have a deep understanding of them and is well positioned to sustain the vessels now and into the future.
Navantia Australia will be responsible for the sustainment of both Supply class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) ships for their first five years of operation commencing mid 2020. We will form, along with the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG), the AOR System Program Office (AORSPO) Enterprise to manage this sustainment capability. Additionally, as the design authority for the Supply class, we are providing configuration and baseline management as an integral component of the through life support for these vessels.
To assist with the sustainment, in particular the maintenance of the vessels, Navantia Australia is currently processing applications for an industry partner to work with us in managing the conduct of the external maintenance tasks and associated activities. Selected Australian Industry Capability will further assist Navantia Australia by providing sustainment and supply services for unique and specialised systems currently fitted to the Australian AORs. Navantia Australia is best positioned to provide through life support to these vessels via the continual development of Navantia’s Australian and global Supply Chains.
Navantia Australia’s maintenance excellence is not limited to the local environment as it has a global reach in providing and influencing the best maintenance practices and products for its customers.
Conducting maintenance accurately, utilising the correct parts and within the scheduled timeframe is what the Navantia Australia prides itself on. Navantia is a world leader in Integrated Platform Monitoring System (IPMS) coupled with data analytics to identify and predict poor performing equipment, which will result in more accurate maintenance planning and improved engineering design.
Navantia Australia prides itself in having equipment availability for the required mission as one of the key success factors toward maintenance excellence. We have been selected as a Finalist for the Essington Lewis Awards 2020 in the category of Minor Sustainment Activity – Under $20m/Year for our work in the LHD Landing Craft Enhancement Program with the Amphibious Combat and Sealift Systems Program Office.
Our commitment to maritime sustainment supports the Government’s plans for a future naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry that delivers comprehensive Australian Industrial Capability, supporting local jobs and the Australian economy.
