Canberra Class LHDs / LLCs

In 2007 Navantia was selected as the designer and hull builder of the Royal Australian Navy’s two Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD).

The Canberra Class LHD provides the Australian Defence Force with one of the most capable and sophisticated air-land-sea amphibious deployment systems in the world. The Class comprises of HMAS Adelaide (L01) and HMAS Canberra (L02).

These 27,000 tonne ships are able to land a force of over 1,000 personnel by helicopter and landing craft.

The hulls were built in Ferrol, Spain and transported on a heavy lift ship by sea to Australia. Both vessels have been commissioned into service and form a crucial part of Navy’s capability.

Navantia was also the prime contractor for the supply of twelve LHD Landing Craft (LLC) to the Royal Australian Navy. All twelve landing craft, designed specifically to operate with the LHDs, were delivered in 2014.

Navantia Australia has been selected as a Finalist in the Essington Lewis Awards for 2020 for our work in the LHD Landing Craft Enhancement Program with the Amphibious Combat and Sealift Systems Program Office in the category of Minor Sustainment Under $20M/year.
